What is ASAM ODS?
ASAM ODS stands for “Open Data Services” and is an established standard published by ASAM e.V. It defines APIs and formats for storing and retrieving test and measurement data based on a data model. Such a data model is built on a base model that provides required data relations and a semantic data context. The data model can be extended to meet various application requirements such as NVH, crash, engine development and others.
Connectivity to existing data and file formats is ensured by ASAM ODS EXD-API plugins. A REST API and a format for data exchange (ATFX) offer additional possibilities for data exchange - even export formats to big data ecosystems are defined by the ASAM ODS standard.
ODS servers act as a data hub for various test benches and measuring devices from different manufacturers. The data can be accessed via the same methods and interfaces regardless of their origin. This even applies to bulk data stored in external files (ASAM MDF), where the database only contains a reference to this external storage location (“mixed mode”). In addition, ODS servers are scalable so that data models can be extended and additional clients from across the tool chain can be included.
The clearly defined data layout and the reliability of a standard make ASAM ODS ideal for long-term data storage. Well-known companies from all over the world are ASAM members and use this standard, including Audi, AVL, BMW, Bosch, Daimler, GM, Honda, Horiba, MTU, Porsche, PSA Peugeot Citroen, Tata Motors, Toyota and many others.
Development and maintenance of ASAM ODS
The ASAM ODS standard is maintained by the ASAM ODS working group. The ASAM ODS standard is developed by Peak Solution and other providers of ASAM ODS components, products and solutions, based on the requirements of users and industry, especially OEMs and Tier1 suppliers. These requirements feed into the ASAM standardization process and are finally integrated into the standard by the ASAM ODS working group.
In addition, Peak Solution sees itself as an advocate for its customers - we bring your requirements into the standard and make sure that your questions are heard and answered. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have requirements for the ASAM ODS standard or see the need for improvements. We can also support you in becoming a member of the ASAM ODS working group.
How is ASAM ODS related to openMDM?
openMDM® is a standard that can be used to build applications for measurement data management systems and is based on ASAM ODS to standardize data storage. This creates the potential to merge and compare measurement data from different contexts. In addition, the data can be exchanged between all ASAM ODS-compatible applications without the need for conversion.
Connecting legacy data with ASAM ODS
Converting legacy data into standard data formats often requires data conversion. This can lead to an increased data volume due to data copies and to an interruption of existing tool chains that use this data. To avoid these conflicts, ASAM ODS has introduced ASAM ODS EXD-API plugins. These plugins enable access to legacy data through microservices that expose the meta and mass data contained. In this way, existing tool chains can be preserved and data duplication avoided.

What is a data model?
A data model defines the metadata of your measurement data and adds semantics to it, thus serving as the basis for machine learning.
