Functional Data Exchange (FDX): An important step towards virtual vehicle development

The prostep ivip FDX working group, in coordination with the VDA (German Association of the Automotive Industry), has defined a standardized data format for the exchange of functional data between OEMs and suppliers. Functional data includes measured, estimated or calculated characteristic curves, characteristic curve fields and parameter values of vehicle components. Development engineers need this information to define simulation models. Peak Solution has been supporting the FDX Working Group since 2019 with organizational services and industry-specific know-how on the use of data management standards.

The new standard aims to streamline the processing of functional data by combining all relevant information in a machine-readable format. On the one hand, a data requester can use this format to describe their requirements for specific functional data. On the other hand, the data supplier can fully understand these requirements so that the corresponding test or simulation data can be generated. The format instructs the data supplier regarding mandatory and optional data and defines requirements for their content. For quality assurance purposes, the format and data structure include software-based checks that detect missing or incorrect entries.

The FDX data format is based on the widely used industry standard ASAM ODS, the associated ATFx data exchange format (XML) and the openMDM application model. This enables the centralized management of large volumes of FDX files using open, tool-independent data management solutions such as the Peak Test Data Manager.

Various OEMs and suppliers have already implemented applications of the standard. At the same time, an “Implementor Forum” of the FDX working group was launched in 2021. Users, tool manufacturers and service providers can exchange experiences with the application of FDX here. This ensures a high level of interoperability for various FDX implementations.

Overall, FDX is another example of how the targeted use and combination of mature industry standards such as ASAM ODS and openMDM sustainably improves the efficiency and quality of development and validation processes at OEMs and suppliers.
